Safety Critical Assessments

A Safety Critical Assessment is a medical evaluation used to ensure that employees working in high-risk roles are medically fit to perform their duties safely. These assessments are typically required for jobs where impaired health could put the employee or others at risk, such as operating heavy machinery, working at height, or driving as part of the role. The assessment may include checks on vision, hearing, general health, medical history, and sometimes drug and alcohol testing.

Tier 1

£100

A Safety Critical Assessment checks that an employee is medically fit to carry out a job where safety is essential. These assessments are needed for roles where a health problem could put the employee or others at risk. This may include jobs such as operating heavy machinery, working at height, or driving.

The assessment may include checks for:

  • vision and hearing
  • heart and respiratory health
  • general physical and mental health
  • drug and alcohol screening (if required)

Tier 2

£120

A Tier 2 Safety Critical Assessment is a more detailed health check for employees working in high-risk roles. It is usually required when the job involves greater safety responsibilities, such as operating heavy machinery, working at height, or driving as part of the role.

The assessment may include:

  • vision and hearing tests
  • heart and respiratory health checks
  • a review of medical history
  • general physical and mental health assessment
  • drug and alcohol screening (where required)

Health Surveillance

Health Surveillance involves regular health checks for employees who are exposed to certain workplace risks, such as noise, vibration, dust, or hazardous substances. These checks help identify early signs of work-related health problems and make sure existing safety measures are working effectively. Health Surveillance also helps ensure employees remain fit and safe to carry out their work.

Spirometry - Lung Function

£50

Spirometry is a simple breathing test used to measure how well a person’s lungs are working.

In workplace health surveillance, spirometry is used for employees exposed to substances that may affect the lungs, such as dust, fumes, chemicals, or other airborne hazards. Regular spirometry testing helps identify early signs of respiratory problems before symptoms become severe.

Audiometry - Hearing Test

£50

Audiometry is a hearing test used to measure how well a person can hear different sounds and frequencies.

In workplace health surveillance, audiometry is used for employees who are regularly exposed to high levels of noise. Regular hearing tests help detect early signs of noise-induced hearing loss before it becomes permanent.

Skin Assessment

£30

A skin assessment is a check of the skin to identify early signs of irritation, dermatitis, or other work-related skin conditions.

Regular checks help identify problems early and ensure that protective measures, such as gloves or barrier creams, are working effectively to protect employees’ skin.

Combined Health Surveillance

This assessment combines spirometry (lung function), audiometry (hearing), and skin checks to monitor the health of employees who may be exposed to workplace risks.

Hand, Arm Vibration Assessment (HAVS) - Tier 1 & 2

£40

The first stage of HAVS surveillance involves a health questionnaire & a follow-up review if any symptoms are reported.

Employees are asked about symptoms such as tingling, numbness, or loss of feeling in the fingers, which can be early signs of HAVS. If symptoms are identified, a trained health professional will carry out a more detailed review to assess the employee’s exposure to vibration & determine whether further assessment is required.

Hand, Arm Vibration Assessment (HAVS) - Tier 3 & 4

£150

If symptoms suggest possible HAVS, the employee may be referred for a clinical assessment with a qualified occupational health professional.

This stage involves a detailed evaluation of symptoms & a physical examination of the hands & arms. Where necessary, a specialist occupational health doctor may carry out a formal medical diagnosis & provide guidance on any work restrictions or adjustments required.

Occupational Health Support

Case/Absence Management

£50

Case management provides occupational health support when an employee has health issues that may affect their ability to work.

Our clinicians assess the employee’s health in relation to their role and provide practical advice to both the employee & employer.

Case management helps businesses:

  • manage sickness absence
  • support employees returning to work
  • identify workplace adjustments
  • reduce long-term absence
  • ensure employees are fit for their role

New Starter Health Declaration

£25

A New Starter Health Declaration is a questionnaire completed by employees before starting a new role. It helps employers identify any health conditions that may affect the employee’s ability to carry out their duties safely.

This allows occupational health professionals to assess whether any workplace adjustments or additional support may be required.

This process helps ensure employees are fit for their role, supports workplace safety, and allows employers to meet their duty of care to staff.

Night Worker Assessment

£25

A Night Worker Assessment is a health check for employees who regularly work during night hours. It helps ensure that individuals are medically fit to work night shifts & that their health is not being negatively affected by their working pattern.

The assessment usually involves a health questionnaire reviewed by an occupational health professional. This helps identify any medical conditions or concerns that may make night work unsuitable or require further advice.
